Here is a frustration every iced coffee drinker knows: you brew a strong, delicious cup, pour it over ice, and within five minutes the ice has melted and turned your coffee into a watery, flavorless disappointment. The first few sips are great. The rest is basically brown water.
The fix is stupidly simple: freeze coffee into ice cubes. When those cubes melt, they add more coffee instead of diluting what is already in your glass. Your drink stays strong from the first sip to the last. It takes almost zero effort and changes the iced coffee experience completely.
How to Make Coffee Ice Cubes
- Brew your coffee. Any method works, drip, pour-over, AeroPress, whatever. You can also use leftover coffee from this morning instead of pouring it down the drain.
- Let it cool. Room temperature is fine. Do not pour boiling coffee into a plastic ice cube tray, it can warp the tray and does not freeze well.
- Pour into an ice cube tray. Standard trays work great. Silicone trays are easier to pop the cubes out of.
- Freeze for at least 4-6 hours. Overnight is ideal.
- Use them. Fill a glass with coffee ice cubes, pour your fresh brew over them, enjoy.
Variations Worth Trying
- Espresso cubes: Freeze pulled espresso shots into cubes. Add milk, you have a self-making iced latte that gets stronger as the cubes melt. Outstanding.
- Milk coffee cubes: Mix coffee with milk before freezing. These create a creamy, self-sweetening iced drink as they melt.
- Cold brew cubes: Freeze your cold brew concentrate directly. These are the strongest option and perfect for iced coffee that stays bold all the way through.
- Sweetened cubes: Dissolve a little sugar or simple syrup into your coffee before freezing. Sweet and strong from start to finish.
This pairs perfectly with the Japanese flash brew method, brew hot directly over coffee ice cubes for an intensely flavored iced coffee that never gets diluted. Summer coffee problems, solved.
