How I Actually Use My Scale Daily

Here's my exact morning routine, it takes maybe 20 seconds longer than scooping, and the results are incomparably better:

  1. Place my V60 dripper on my mug, set both on the scale, hit tare
  2. Grind coffee into the filter, watching the scale until it reads 15.0g
  3. Hit tare again to zero out the coffee weight
  4. Start my timer (or hit the timer button on the scale)
  5. Pour water in stages, watching the scale, 30g for the bloom, then pour to 240g total
  6. Done. Perfect cup, every time

The whole weighing process adds maybe 20 seconds to my routine. Twenty seconds for consistent, reproducible, actually good coffee. I'll take that trade every day of the week.

Weighing Water: The Part Most People Skip

Weighing your beans is step one. But weighing your water is where things really click. Most people eyeball water using their kettle markings or mug fill lines, and those are surprisingly inaccurate.

Here's the convenient truth: 1 milliliter of water weighs almost exactly 1 gram. So if your recipe calls for 250ml of water, just pour until your scale reads 250g. No measuring cups, no guessing, no "fill to the 10 oz line" approximations. Just weight.

The real talk: A scale won't magically fix bad beans or a terrible grinder. But it eliminates the most common source of inconsistency in home brewing, measurement error, and gives you a solid foundation to improve everything else. Fifteen bucks.
