How to Make Affogato: Espresso Meets Ice Cream

If you have never had an affogato, stop whatever you are doing after reading this and make one. Seriously. It takes less than two minutes, requires exactly two ingredients, and it is hands down the best way to end a dinner party or treat yourself on a random Tuesday.

Affogato means "drowned" in Italian. The concept is exactly what it sounds like: you drown a scoop of ice cream in a shot of freshly pulled espresso. Hot meets cold. Bitter meets sweet. Creamy meets intense. It is absurdly simple and absurdly good.

What You Need

  • One shot of espresso (about 30ml / 1oz), freshly pulled and hot
  • One scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream, the best quality you can get
  • A small cup or glass, a rocks glass, espresso cup, or small bowl works

The key detail: Use the best vanilla ice cream you can find. Since there are only two ingredients, quality matters enormously. Cheap ice cream with artificial vanilla will taste like exactly that. A good vanilla bean gelato or premium ice cream makes this transcendent.

  1. Scoop first. Place one generous scoop of ice cream into your cup or glass. Put it back in the freezer for a minute while you pull your shot, you want the ice cream properly frozen so it melts slowly.
  2. Pull your shot. Brew a standard double espresso. If you do not have an espresso machine, a strong moka pot brew works as a substitute. Concentrated and hot is what matters.
  3. Pour immediately. Pour the hot espresso directly over the ice cream. Do not wait, the temperature contrast is the whole point.
  4. Eat immediately. There is no plating, no garnishing, no waiting. Grab a spoon and dig in while the ice cream is melting into the espresso, creating this incredible half-liquid, half-frozen, bitter-sweet situation.

Variations Worth Trying

  • Chocolate gelato: Basically a mocha in dessert form. Dark chocolate works best.
  • Salted caramel ice cream: The salt amplifies both the espresso bitterness and the caramel sweetness. Outstanding.
  • Add a splash of amaretto or Kahlua: Pour a tablespoon of liqueur over the ice cream before adding espresso. Date-night level upgrade.
  • Coconut ice cream: Dairy-free and delicious, the coconut fat gives it a rich, tropical twist.
Dinner party secret: Affogato is the ultimate low-effort, high-impact dessert. Keep quality ice cream in your freezer, pull shots to order, and watch your guests lose their minds over something that took you 90 seconds to make. It beats spending an hour on a complicated dessert every time.
