Latte art requires a base of crema-topped espresso — the contrast between the dark crema and white microfoam is what creates the design. A moka pot or AeroPress shot can work in a pinch, but real espresso with crema gives the clearest canvas.

Milk Texture

Latte art is roughly 80% milk texture, 20% pour technique. The target is microfoam: smooth, glossy, with bubbles too small to see, flowing like wet paint rather than bubble bath.

Pour Fundamentals

Heart
Tilt the cup ~20°. Pour from ~4 inches with a thin stream aimed at the center-back, filling to 60-70%. Drop the pitcher to ~0.5 inch above the surface, increase flow — a white circle appears and grows. Let it fill about two-thirds of the surface, then raise the pitcher to thin the stream and pull through the center to the far side in one motion, creating the point and the two lobes.
Tulip
Fill to ~50% the same way. Drop low, pour a white circle, then tilt the pitcher back upright to stop the flow. Move the pour point back ~0.5 inch and push again — the new circle pushes the previous one forward. Repeat 2-4 more times for a 3-5 layer tulip, then pull through from back to front to finish. A full tulip pour runs about 5-7 seconds; layers that merge mean the pauses between pushes were too short.
Rosetta
Fill to ~60%. Drop low, start a white circle, then add a rapid side-to-side wrist wiggle (~0.5 inch each side) while slowly pulling the pour point backward. The wiggle creates the leaf branches; the backward pull stretches them along the cup. Finish with the same pull-through as the heart. Rosettas typically take more attempts to get symmetrical — uneven wiggle timing produces lopsided leaves.
Fixing Common Failures

A full pitcher of real steamed milk yields 3-4 small pours before it separates — work within the 30-45 second window after steaming. Recording pours on a phone reveals height, wiggle evenness, and cup-tilt issues that are hard to feel in the moment.
